Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) has drawn significant criticism from both conservative and some bipartisan commentators after her appearance this month at the Munich Security Conference and a subsequent Instagram Live response to critics.

But rather than take some responsibility for flubbing an answer on a longstanding, fundamental U.S. security position regarding Taiwan, the Democratic-socialist blamed President Trump in a bizarre online rant.

Ocasio-Cortez was asked at the international security gathering about U.S. policy on defending Taiwan in the event of a Chinese invasion. Video of her response, in which she paused frequently and spoke in general terms about U.S. goals to avoid conflict, circulated widely and prompted a wave of online criticism.

In an Instagram Live session responding to backlash, Ocasio-Cortez defended her foreign policy credentials and faulted critics — including those on social media — for questioning her supposed expertise, at one point contrasting her measured approach to speaking with what she described as impulsive rhetoric from Trump, who actually has the responsibility to carry out U.S. policy toward Taiwan.

“If you think that I don’t understand foreign policy because out of hours of discourse about international affairs, I pause to think about one of the most sensitive geopolitical issues that currently exist on Earth,” Ocasio-Cortez said, “I’m afraid the issue’s not my understanding, but rather the problem is perhaps you’ve gotten adjusted to a president that never thinks before he speaks and doesn’t care about the implications of his words before he speaks on matters like these.”

Her remarks have been mocked by several Republican figures and commentators. Former President Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance publicly ridiculed the lawmaker’s comments, and other conservative voices labeled her performance a “train wreck” and a “word salad.”

“After the president said that I was so smart and that I didn’t want to repeat our congresswoman who froze for 20 seconds over in Munich — now I’m tempted, sir, just to freeze for 20 seconds and just stare at the cameras. And maybe they’ll say nice things about me like they do about Congresswoman Cortez!” Vance said over the weekend.

The criticism extends beyond conservative media. Some commentators, including a Catholic bishop and bipartisan political strategists, questioned her foreign policy responses on issues such as Venezuela’s geography and U.S. troop commitments, underscoring broader concerns about her grasp of global affairs.

Ocasio-Cortez was asked at the global conference to explain what the U.S. should do if China invaded Taiwan, a contentious possibility that many believe could become reality soon.

“Um, you know, I think that this is such a, you know, I think that this is a, um, this is of course a very long-standing policy of the United States,” she stammered while pausing several times. “And I think what we are hoping for is that we want to make sure that we never get to that point.”

Many news outlets have reported that Ocasio-Cortez is widely believed to be attempting to increase her name recognition in order to run for higher office, possibly including the presidency. She denied these suspicions following her recent embarrassing gaffe.

“Everyone’s got this story wrong, that this is about me running for president,” she said to the New York Times.

“I could give — whatever about that, to be honest,” she added.

Ocasio-Cortez and California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D), who was also at the conference, both were critical of Trump’s policies, which many found inappropriate to do so on foreign soil.

Newsom’s appearance drew attention as he spoke about the direction of U.S. leadership on the international stage, even as California continues to grapple with ongoing challenges at home, including budget pressures, homelessness, and public safety concerns.

They were joined at the conference by several Democratic lawmakers who advocated for a global wealth tax during discussions on economic inequality and international cooperation.

Ocasio-Cortez has aligned herself with progressive lawmakers in Congress on economic policy and has supported similar tax proposals domestically.
